The Student Loan Time Bomb Is Ticking

Legacy Repayment Plans Are Being Eliminated. Act Before It’s Too Late

A massive shift is underway in federal student loan repayment, and if you don’t act before June 30, 2026, you could lose access to the repayment plans that offer the lowest payments and the highest forgiveness potential.

What’s Happening?

The recently passed “One Big Beautiful Bill” will permanently eliminate all legacy income-driven repayment (IDR) plans by June 30, 2026. This means:

If you’re not already in a legacy IDR plan (like IBR, PAYE, or REPAYE)
you won’t be able to enter after that date.

If you’re in one now and fall out due to a missed recertification
you can’t get back in.

If you switch to another plan or make the wrong move
you’re locked out permanently.

Your only options will be the new Plan (RAP) or Standard Repayment
both of which will likely cost you far more.

This is what we call a Roach Motel: you can check out of your legacy plan, but you can never check back in.

Why This Matters?

For most borrowers, the new RAP is a terrible deal compared to legacy IDR plans. Once these older plans are sunset, there’s no going back. And if you make even a minor mistake, like missing your annual recertification, you could permanently lose your best repayment options.
